JAY, N.Y. — The Town of Jay invites community members to create a vision for the town’s
future at an open house on Thursday, October 17, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Community Center
located at 11 School Lane in Au Sable Forks.
This open house is an opportunity for the community to participate in updating the Town of Jay’s
comprehensive plan. A comprehensive plan is a written document that describes a community’s
goals and includes recommended actions to achieve those goals. The Town of Jay’s
comprehensive plan was written in 1980 and last updated in 1997.
“The more people we hear from, the stronger our town’s plan for the future will be,” says Town
of Jay Councilor Olivia Dwyer. Dwyer serves on the town’s Comprehensive Plan Special Board,
a volunteer-led group organizing community outreach. “We encourage every person who cares
about this community to join us so we can hear their ideas and answer their questions.”
The open house event allows community members to drop in at any time to view displays about
what a comprehensive plan is and how the process works. Each participant moves at their own
pace. Organizers estimate a visit will take about 30 minutes. Volunteers will answer questions,
record feedback, and collect ideas for what should be included in the comprehensive plan.
The Town of Jay includes the hamlets of Au Sable Forks, Jay, Upper Jay, and the Ausable Acres
subdivision. All are welcome to attend the open house, including residents, property owners,
business owners, and those who work in or visit the town.
The comprehensive plan process is funded by a $66,960 grant from the New York State
Department of Conservation Smart Growth Program. The Town of Jay will contribute up to
$10,000 to the costs of the planning process, which is funded by Essex County occupancy tax.
