New York Association of Towns Annual Meeting & Training Conference
This week, I attended the New York Association of Towns (NYAOT) Annual Meeting and Training Conference in New York City alongside our Highway Superintendent, Town Justice, Court Clerk, and the Clerk to the Supervisor. We participated in several classes, covering topics such as Municipal Planning, Fiscal Oversight, Infrastructure Funding, Procurement Policy Regulations, and Judicial Issues. This conference also provided valuable networking opportunities with colleagues, funders, and vendors. In the Exhibit and Trade Show, we connected with agencies and vendors that will help us improve efficiencies in record keeping, accounting, and planning.
Next week, I will be taking what I learned to the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) Legislative Conference in Albany, where I will be representing Essex County. This will be another great opportunity to bring back knowledge and resources to benefit both our county and town.
Board of Assessment Review
The Town of Jay is still seeking individuals interested in joining our Board of Assessment Review (BAR). While we have a few interested candidates, I want to ensure everyone is aware of this opportunity. The BAR will meet in May for Grievance Day at the Community Center, allowing Town of Jay residents to present proof if they believe their assessed property value differs from the Town Assessor’s valuation. Appointed individuals will receive training from the Essex County Real Property office in April or May. If interested, please submit a letter or email to my office as soon as possible.
Economic Development & Housing Initiatives
The Town of Jay continues working to encourage economic development with the help of the North Country Rural Development Coalition (NDRC). The NDRC has provided essential tools to address the housing crisis, leading to key achievements:
- The first Essex County Landbank home was sold to a young local family in Upper Jay.
- A $300,000 home renovation grant was secured exclusively for the Town of Jay.
- Funding was obtained to remove a blighted structure in the hamlet of Jay.
Additionally, the NDRC is hosting a Q&A session on the Vacant Rental Property grant, which aims to convert vacant units into affordable housing. This event will take place on March 12th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at their office in Ticonderoga. Please see the attached flyer for more details.
Hope you have a great weekend,
Matt
