Attention Vacation/Short-Term Rental (STR) Owners:
New York State is enacting a law requiring all STR units to be registered and subject to sales tax. The law, currently awaiting final approval of Chapter Amendments from Governor Hochul, is expected to take effect by the end of the year.
While the requirement in the Town of Jay to register with Essex County isn’t new, additional fines will soon apply for non-compliance. Don’t wait—take this opportunity to ensure you’re registered! Use the Essex County Treasurer’s form and instructions here: https://essexcountyny.gov/downloads/Treasurers/Room_Occupancy_Tax_Registration_Form_2024-12-18.pdf
Programs for Youth and Seniors:
As your representative on Essex County’s Human Services Committee and the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Essex County Board, I’m excited to connect our youth and seniors with impactful programs:
- New 4-H Teen After-School Program:
Teens interested in exploring career opportunities can now participate in a new 4-H after-school program. For details, check out the attached flyer or contact Jake Yambor at jry34@cornell.edu - Bingozise for Seniors:
We kicked off Bingozise last Monday with 10 participants at the Community Center! This free program combines light exercise and bingo for a fun, engaging experience. Join us Mondays and Wednesdays (for other programming), then stay for lunch through the ACAP meal program—all at the Community Center!
Join the Board of Assessment Review (BAR):
We’re seeking individuals to serve on the Board of Assessment Review. One member’s term is ending, and we’re also looking for an alternate. If you’re interested, please submit a written request to my office. Training will be required in Elizabethtown, typically in March.
Have a great week,
Matt
